03/23/19 Sermon Notes

Sermon series: Seeing Jesus: Finding The Center of What We Believe  Sermon Title: The Secret That Changes Everything  Scripture: Romans 6:4  Sermon theme: The surrender of conversion is symbolized by baptism.
As I understand it, coding can at times frustrate even the most careful. After hours of labor success is still not guaranteed. Steve McConnell in the book “Code Complete: A Practical Handbook of Software Construction” cited two studies (1973 & 1984) that shed some light on where to place the blame. According to them, 95% of programming errors were, in fact, the programmers fault. Often programmers were tempted to look for exotic solutions when in fact, the problem was looking at them in the mirror every day.
The person in may be the programmer’s biggest problem, but rest assured he or she is the Christian’s biggest problem too.  For the believer who is frustrated with trying hard to do better and getting nowhere, I want to shed a little light on where to place the blame, and then share the secret that changes everything.
1. The problem stems from a faulty premise. “As with everything else, I will be rewarded because I am good”.  a. Problem? None are good. (Romans 3:12- There is none righteous)  b. Additional problem- Psalm 51:5 “I was shapen in iniquity… 2. Most try to solve the problem but fail.  a. We couldn’t fix it if we tried. (Romans 3:20- By the deeds of the law no flesh shall be justified) b. There’s something wrong with the code that programming can’t fix!  3. There’s a simple solution…  a. John 3:7 “Ye must be born again”  b. How? John 3:5- Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.  4. This “rebirth” consist of two parts.  a. The Spirit- John 3:8 “The wind bloweth where it listeth…”  b. The water- Accompanies the rebirth.  Jesus’ explanation shows baptism as a symbol of conversion that accompanies the experience. When you are changed, baptism is the symbol.  ● Romans 6:4- We are buried with Him in baptism…  ○ Burial and resurrection both happen to you even if you had a hand in your death! (This is why immersion is important)  ● Luke 3:21 Jesus was baptized too.  ○ This makes baptism a symbol of surrender and that’s the secret. (This is why Jesus modeled it. He surrendered to His Father) As a follower of Christ, I win when I no longer try. I win when I decide to die. He does the rest!
1. Galatians 3:27 “ For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.“ 2. 2 Corinthians 5:17  “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.“ 3. Galatians 2:20 “ I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me”
The call:  ● As a disciple, I am commissioned to make disciples. (Matthew 28:19) This includes the call to baptize.  ● On occasion, I am privileged to lead others to a new understanding of Jesus they never had before. Then I am commanded to rebaptize. (Acts 19:25)  ● Whether you are hearing something new or being made new, Jesus calls.
